P1 - Be able to generate ideas for an originalmedia product based on a client brief.
This magazine is supposed to be aimed for a high end audience this tends to be the ABC1 demographic. This magazine is also supposed to be aimed at a thirteen to twenty-five demographic. This magazine must also feel like it is an independent publication. This is also supposed to be aimed at the 'YouTube' and "Instagram" generation. This means that it should appeal and make reference to social media and its users.
A Demographic is a way of grouping people. For example a demographic could be based on Gender, Ethnicity, Age, or Disposable income.
The demographical target audience for this brief would fit in the ABC1 socio-economic bracket as the brief mentioned that the magazine should be 'high end' which suggests it should be more expensive and therefore aimed at people with a higher level of disposable income. The brief also specifies that the target audience are to be 18-30 year old who don't typically consume traditional printed publications so the magazine has to be engaging by use of media which is similar to that found on YouTube or Instagram so that this readership finds an audience that is not only vast but also dedicated.
Google Dictionary states that a magazine is: "a periodical publication containing articles and illustrations, often on a particular subject or aimed at a particular readership.". The main purpose of a magazine tends to be purpose to entertain, inform and educate. However a cynic may also claim that a secondary purpose is to sell advertising space.
'Bauer Publishing' or 'Bauer Media Group' is a Germany media company which holds its headquarters in Hamburg Northern Germany. They are in charge of managing more than six hundred magazines, roughly four hundred digital products and fifty radio and TV stations around the world. This includes all aspects of production and distributioin of their products.
"Seventeen" is a similar magazine to that which I have been tasked to produced, as it is aimed at females in their teenage years which is very similar to the brief. It is also targets the millennial generation through things like Romance and Fashion as well as celebrity features and Self Improving articles. Another comparable magazine is Kerrang magazine who is aimed at males, aged roughly 17-24, who typically would tend to have a large disposable income with which they buy records, tickets, and of course the magazine itself. It is a magazine that talks about Metal and Rock Culture as well as Bands and new music that is coming or has come out.
Magazines often follow notable conventions some of which are listed below;
-- Masthead - Title block of the magazine, usually eye-catching and has to be distinct
-- Menu - List of what the magazine contains

-- Sidebar - A box on the side that inform the reader of more features
-- Splash - The main story on the front page
-- Spread - A story that covers more than one page
-- Stand first - Text after the headline which is designed to sell the story to the reader
-- Strap-line - Subheading under the headline
-- Tag - A word or phrase to engage the reader to buy the magazine.

The client has specific requirements for the magazine that you create. These are that the target market is fixed at 18 - 30 furthermore it's "for the Youtube and Instagram generation" therefore it must constantly reference new and developing social media platforms and trends. This could include popular figures and the development of memes.
According to google demographics means "statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it." This means the varying groups of people around the country and can be used to determine target audience.
As before said the target age for this is 18 - 30 we can also assume that the social class is going to be high for example ABC1 due to the dispensable income required to regularly acquire the magazine.
The purpose of a magazine is to inform. The reader could be informed of many things however, these include: Current Affairs, Sport and Popular Media.
The client Bauer Media are a publishing company based in Europe, they tend to produce more upmarket niche magazines.
Without a decent level of knowledge into the target market a product can not be effectively advertised.
You also need to have a knowledge of what people dislike or don't want to see so that you can effectively plan a product that doesn’t offend anyone or that people don’t enjoy.
When it comes to planing and coming up with ideas I thought hard about my interests, as a member of the target demographic I saw myself as an ideal person to base the product off. And I decided that what I would like to see as a magazine in the market is a magazine that discusses social conflict as well as benefits and downfalls in the delicate battle that surrounds Animal Rights campaigns. From old ladies making hedgehog sactuaries to the unyielding Sea Shepherd Campaigners.
However this only gave me a base idea from which to fund the rest of my magazine. To further aid this I read news articles written by and about Animal Rights Activists. This gave me insights into exactly what it is that sells the concept of Animal Rights activism. And how structure and creating an image can influence the way that people react with the media.
This Idea did not, however, have an easy birth. My idea started out as a periodical based around Internet Trends and Memes focusing on the people who make them and those who interact, as well as the reasons why they are so popular and why there is such a stark boom bust economy. However after running this past some classmates and my teacher, I came to the conclusion that the conception had little to work with and that more cynical potential buyers would discredit it as too much of a risky concept. Hence my idea to work with another passion of mine which is animal rights...
I decided to focus my magazine on the subject of animal rights activism and those who devote their time to trying to improve rights for animals and give them new leases on life as well as how you can contribute to the future of the planet in other ways. This idea can be broken into two distinct routes for a magazine. One softer, individual help magazine and the other a hard hitting look into organisations and individuals.

Magazine Idea 1
'Fight For Flight'
This magazine, focusing on animal rights, in particular that of the activists who use often illegal or dangerous straggles to push their beliefs about the conditions with which animals across all walks of life are subjected. This Magazine will be directly aimed at the target demographic as it is the primary age of people interested in Animal Rights. I know this because according to a survey of people who turned vegan 78% turned vegan between the ages of 16 - 34 and 52% were between 16 - 24. Its name is in part a pun on the phrase 'fight or flight' wherein the people who fight for the freedom or 'flight' of animals. It also comes from the twin attitudes of people represented in my magazine as in those who fight and those who do not. The magazines USP is that instead of trying to persuade people about animal rights issues it looks at the lives of activists and questions whether or not is an effective or moral way of doing things. |
Magazine Idea 2'Your Choice'
A magazine that discusses vegan recipes, ways to eat cheaper meat free diets and ways to help the environment in other ways i.e Recycling and anti pollution measures. As with my first idea this suits the target demographic, it is especially good for students who wish to eat cheaply but as a vegan. The name quite simply refers to the fact that some people choose to live that way and so therefore there is a magazine for them. This magazines USP is the fact that it af=dvertises cheaper ways of life as opposed to the usual far more expensive options that are often available to vegans. |
After recieving feedback on my first two covers I produced the second focusing heavily on the layouot and design of things as opposed to the contents of the magazine. As well as making the title a lot bolder so that it stands out on the newsrack.
