P1 - Explain how different sound elements are used.
The albatross - 1.40 — 1.45:
Animation shows a characters fishing rod reel and then smack him in the face.
The purpose of this media product is to display the problems of alcoholism, it does this through showing an isolated fisherman who has lost everything (displayed through the loss of his fishing rod and therefore his living) watching himself, displayed as a glass creature, having to drink excess amounts of alcohol until eventually the only source of beauty (a small robin), that could be a metaphor for his family or his last hope is punched by the glass creature, this makes the fisherman understand his plight and realise he must kill his monster. After doing so the robin returns. Sound is used very effectively, the main sounds you hear are the clinking of classes and the pouring of drink, this shows the focus that the Fishermans mind has taken on wherein the only thing that matters is the drink it self. This brings the audience in, into a feeling of desperation that is shared with the protagonist of this short film. Diegetic sound is used in a ubiquitous fashion in this piece of media, as dialogue is uncommon and presents itself in a fashion more like a monologue from the monster with returned grunts from the fisherman. This lack of dialogue and resulting volume of Diegetic sound creates an effect as described earlier where the audience is drawn into the Fishermans own head and isolation. The visuals that go with this short film are truly the supposed point of focus for the average consumer. They tell the true story of the Fishermans loss and descent into addiction with the sounds providing a well required and appreciated addition that helps to enthral the watcher.

The Hitchhiker - Short Horror Film:
A short presumably student made film that follows a young man hitching for a lift. After a car refuses to stop for him he starts to walk on along a long desert highway, finally in the distance a white Chevrolet pickup appears on the horizon, noticing this the hitchhiker stops and waits for it. After a brief conversation indicating that the driver is headed in the same direction as the ‘hiker the Hitchhiker walks around the car to get in and receive a lift. During this period the in car radio plays a police warning about someone who has been killed and all his possessions stolen by the side of the road. The films ends with the driver smiling and driving alone indicating the hitchhiker has been killed. The piece has clearly been made to entertain audiences on the internet and perhaps also as a tool to further the creators skills. This piece appears to be an amateurish production, this is made apparent through the sub par acting as well as lots of the audio having a very noticeable wind noise over it. The majority of the film follows the young man walking along the road with the car approaching from behind. During this minute long sequence there is a lot of diegetic audio as well as some Non-diegetic music that plays. The Diegetic audio comes in the form of birdsong and insect chirps as well as the crunch of the Hitchhikers footsteps along the gravel lined edge of the road. These natural yet normally unheard noises create a feeling of isolation unlike that of the Fisherman. Wherein the Fisherman was lost inside himself and had no one to turn to, but the Hitchhiker is truly alone and has no one that could ever help to save him. This sound combined with the forbidding music foreshadows the fact that this hitchhiker is in an incredibly perilous situation. The visuals that shows vast empty desert combined with one long bisecting road with only one car on it also help to hit home that feeling that the hitchhiker is not and will not be safe.

The intro and theme song for the hit HBO show The Sopranos
This clip is perhaps one of my favourites pieces of footage put to music. It is a sequence of short clips that display Tony Soprano's (a New Jersey Mob boss) journey through New Jersey to his house. There is no diegetic audio in this clip. But there is a song that goes over the top. Released by the Alabama 3 in 1997 the track, Woke Up This Morning, perfect captures the life of a gangster of such notoriety. The hook "woke up this morning (got your self a gun)" puts you into the mind of an evil killer who stops at nothing to progress the life for him and his family. The track also features a blend of Country: guitar, harmonica and "whiskey smooth vocals" with house 303 bass hooks. This blend gives the feel of criminal activity crossed with a Wild West lawlessness that only a mob boss can obtain. The purpose of this scene is to settle the audience into the show and make them keep watching. Like the blurb of a book the introduction to a television series can heavily dictate peoples choice to watch or not. It means that the start of the show can be slower and not have the same aim to draw people in. I think that this clip succeeds in doing that. The visuals go with the song very well, it is very well cut so that the film flows with the music. This creates an immersion that locks you into what you are seeing right until the ending credits.
