This shot is of the round church in Cambridge. It is a classic part of Cambridge and one of very few round churches in the country. It shows an interesting and usually unseen view of the city.
I will use this shot |
This is a shot of a statue of Henry VIII. He is instrumental in the building of the city. He founded amongst other things Trinity College and helped build Kings College Chapel one of the most famous buildings in England. There is a part where a pigeon flies from the statues feet to the shoulder. As the king was an avid Falconer it seems fitting to include this bit.
I will use this shot. |

Whilst pigeons are a key aspect of the city and you won't travel far without seeing one I don't think they are instrumental in defining culture within Cambridge. Therefore I am likely to only use this shot to fill out a scene.

Queens College. A fine building that displays very well the typical architectural style that Cambridge upholds within its colleges. I will use this shot.

A pan of one of Cambridges many parks. Preserving green space is a key aspect of Cambridge life and I think that this shot displays that. As well as more impressive architecture that my film helps to display. This really helps to show off how Cambridge is unique from other cities. I will use this shot.

M3 - Create production materials that follow the codes and conventions of the chosen genre for the media product.
In order to create this piece of media I had to research promotional videos, this was so that i could know what sort of things I had to create before I made it. As the client is quite important being Cambridge city council, I really needed to make sure that what I produced was perfect. In many cases Neales genre theory, that genre follows and occasionally subverts standard conventions, is important to follow. However with this I see no need to subvert anything as what I want to produce is a basic to code promotional video.
The codes and conventions for promotional videos are:
- To inform the viewer about what it is you are promoting-
- To give a good impression about what you are promoting so that the viewer sees and remembers it
- Music to set the mood and tone of the video-
- A variety of unique angles and shot types. This interests the viewer and stops the video seeming repetitive and therefore potentially boring-
- Transitions should be simple and not too flashy, the last thing you want to do is distract the audience from what you are promoting-
- Promotional videos should be quite short so that the audience doesn't get bored. This time should be around 3 - 5 minutes. This gives you enough time to convey lots of information-
- The video should be well lit and sunny. This makes it look inviting and a good place to be, which will be very good in terms of persuading people to visit.
How I followed the conventions...
To inform the viewer about Cambridge and why it should win the award for City of Culture I included a voice over as well as titles with the name of the location on. This should be more than enough. I also included the definition of Cambridge so that the audience can not be at all confused as to exactly what I mean when I talk about Culture especially in relation to Cambridge.
To give the audience a good impression of Cambridge I tried to film in the sun to show off a bright and vibrant city. However I had to film work for this Unit in February which posed a logistical problem in that there is less sun in the winter naturally. This meant that in a post production role I needed to saturate my footage and add some colour correction so that it seems bright and warm in Cambridge when I am filming.
I used some upbeat music that is quite repetitive in nature. This is key as it means that it will not distract the viewer.
I made sure to vary how I filmed the city so that there is the maximum variation in shot type whilst remaining sensible and shouldn't distract the viewer. This goes into my transitions, I made sure that they are more interesting that a standard fade to black, however I also made sure that they don't distract from the content of my video, as flashy graphics are not as important as showing how good the city is.
My video is two minutes and forty seconds which although it is slightly shorter than the amount that i recommenced I think it is still very good as it is not too long but still covers everything that needs saying.
