P3 - Describe the Multiplatform distribution methods.
There are four types of radio broadcast that are used in most radios. These common types are:
Heart uses FM and recently DAB radio styles, this is because they want to have the best quality sounds possible. Especially as people are tuning in to listen to their favourite songs which they don't want to miss bits of because of some interference. The station is still available on both DAB and FM because Heart wants to maximise who listens to their station as that maximises how much money they can make. This being said despite their impressive bandwidths Heart only broadcasts regionally, this is to create a more personalised feel with its audience, therefore it caps the signal strength so that it can only be listened to in a certain area.
Radio 4 on the other hand has slightly more listenability, it can be heard through FM and DAB channels just like Heart however it also has an app that allows you to be able to listen to programmes that have already been aired and also to listen to live programmes through "Internet Radio".
If I was to air my show through a professional radio company I would follow in the lead of Heart and Radio 4 and make sure that I ran it with both an FM and DAB broadcasting type.
- AM - Amplitude Modulation
- FM - Frequency Modulation
- DAB - Digital audio broadcasting
- Internet Radio
