P6 - Development of an original character for a graphic novel
My characters name is D.Wayne.
He will wear dark brown clothing like Rick Grimes from the walking dead or the man with no name from Sergio Leones Spaghetti Westerns. This includes heavy Doc Marten boots as well as a brown, fur lined faux sheepskin jacket, he wears dark sunglasses even indoors, showing that whilst he is a serious survivalist type he has time in his life to display vanity, and to create an impression on people. His hair is short and dark, and has a clear show of stubble on his face, this counteracts the sunglasses descion based purely on vanity and shows that whilst he cares about his appearence he does not necessarily think about it that hard. A white T-shirt and dark cargo trousers finishes his clothing. He does not wear a hat.
This is often considered to be clothes that a survivalist type of character might wear, this suits my characters nature. Furthermore a psychology of colour analysis states that red and black can show Boldness and professionalism, as brown includes both of these colours it implies that D is a powerful and bold character. However this changes when him and four others go to Mars. On Mars they all wear identical spacesuits, with name tags being the only difference, I feel this is important because it means that when the alien starts to pick them off, there is no desicion or prejudice in its choice of kill despite who the characters might be on earth.

D.Wayne is as previously stated a survivalist character, this shows through when on Mars and he decides to set up camp before nightfall, furthermore the camp that he sets up will look like a traditional human exploration camp. This shows his confidence when in such situations. He is also surprisingly level headed when the first member of the crew gets killed, even so far as to make a joke. If he had to have five traits they would be...
Confident leader;
Resilient;
Tough;
Intelligent;
Unfeeling;
He is very quick to volunteer himself for a dangerous trip to Mars, even when told he would be stranded for a certain amount of time, and that the equiptment is untested and highly dangerous. This shows his love of adventure and addiction to the adrenaline that it causes. Whilst fundementally he is a good person he is shown to have no empathy or consideration of feelings, for example when on board the rocket when asked about his crew he replies "They'll do I suppose" despite the fact that they are well within hearing range of what he said.

M2 - Explain the characteristics and features of the original character.
His clothing as briefly explained in P6 will be mostly neutral colours. A brown coat with a fur lining paired with a basic white t-shirt. This is because the characters fashion sense comes not from how things look but how effectively useful they can be to him. Rather like the Picture of Indiana Jones where you can see him dressed in simple clothes that are practically useful if not particularly stylish.
However this dress soon changes when the characters go to space as naturally, someone can not wear standard clothes on a planet with limited gravity and no breathable air. Therefore he will of course be in a space suit. This space suit will for some of the time have a Sun Visor over the face to protect his eyes from the harsh UV radiation however when the visor is lifted we will see the character still wearing his dark gold framed glasses. A running comedic element throughout the comic will be D.Waynes perpetually lit cigar. This is partly to bring some relief to sad scenes as overall the comic is designed to entertain in a positive way. The reason that this is humorous is because of course you can not smoke a cigar in a space suit but there he is doing it. |
For this comic book my character is an archetypal 'tough guy' like Rambo, Indiana Jones or Lara Croft, D.Wayne is a dangerous fearless explorer whose final location is his pure priority. He is a 35 - 40 year old man but we never find out his actual age through out the comic. I again chose this age because of the similarity to others such as: Rick Grimes, Indiana Jones and Rambo. As the character wears dark glasses perpetually the main way that I am going to convey his emotional range is through his mouth and whether he is smiling or frowning or so on. This makes the mouth of my character a very important focus point.
As I was writing with the most being the expressive part of his face, when I draw him I am going to have to choose some main instantly recognisable emotions that he can convey. These will be Happy (grinning) Sad (frowning) and Angry (a mixture of frowning with eyebrows protruding above the glasses). |
